Referring to animals

Hello Olga,

In the Reading Russian Workbook Lesson 2, in Russian it says, "Who is this? This is a dog." In English we would say, "What is this?" when referring to an animal, not "Who is this" (unless we were asking its name). Do Russians refer to animals as "who" instead of "what" in all situations?

Thank you,
Mandy

Yes, you are right. On the contrast from English, Russians refer to animals as who in all situations.
Generally, we refer as who to all living things: bees, birds, etc.

Thanks, Olga. We just moved on to lesson 3, where I see that this subject is addressed. From now on I'll wait a few lessons before asking a question here. smile
