Hello, guys,

I have one question regarding Russian greetings.
I was told by my friend, who went to Russia once, that Russians don't greet you when you enter the store. Does it apply to any Russian place or it happend to my friend because he had an accent and they did not understand him?

Yes, this is true. Russians don't say 'Hi' to you when you enter the store unless you know the person. You enter the store and , if you need some help with finding an item or check the price, you say: "Excuse me, I need ..." (" Извините, мне нужен ...")

I have another question about greetings. The word 'здравствуйте' is difficult to pronounce. Is it OK to use 'привет' instead?

Hi, Paola,
The greeteing 'привет' you can use only with your close friends or with a family. It is inappropriate to use this greeting with a person whom you don't know well. It's really informal. You can say 'привет' to a kid, but with adult you should use 'здравствуйте'.
And it is not that difficult. After repeating it 15-30 times you will get it for sure. The good technique to memorize this greeting is to divide it into syllables and pronounce it slowly at the begining. And, of course you should repeat this word after a native speaker. biggrin
