I wonder about the correct pronunciation of Russian щ. On many sites they say that it should be pronounced as shch. I listened to the audio and did not hear ch part. I also found a Ukrainian website with pronunciation audio, and I hear the shch. Can anybody make it clear for me?
Thank you

No wonder you don’t hear ch, because it’s not there. In many courses they present it with 2 different sounds. I think originally it happened, because someone tried to illustrate the difference between ш and щ. And, if you pronounce quickly and casually shch together with a vowel, you will get it: fresh chicken.
But you will get much closer sound if you do the same with shsh: English sheet.

The pronunciation of Russian and Ukrainian щ is different. In Ukrainian they pronounce it shch exactly as in fresh chicken: щітка = brush, що= what.
In Russian though it sounds as soft ШШ. It's always softer and longer than Ш.

I read on one forum that in some regions of Russia, for a example in Saint Petersburg, they pronounce щ as shch.
